Dee Boersma: Pay attention to penguins

Summary:

Penguin is an adorable and precious animal on the earth; however, the number of this specie has sharply kept declining during the last 40 years. In Dee Boersma’s survey, it shows that penguins will go extinct if we still pay no attention to them. First of all, polluting activity by human is the main reason affecting penguin’s natural habitat and living environment. In Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, all the ships dump their wastes directly into the ocean. And the most critical dumping is spilled oil which killed a great amount of penguins and other ocean species. Another factor is climate change in the world, so penguins have less land to inhabit. The temperature goes up. Some lands become deserts. They need appropriate temperature and enough water to live, so the only way to survive is to move to another place. In addition, hard to find food resources is the third reason. When baby penguin is born, the father has to go out to find food for his family; however, the further he swims away from home, the higher risk that he might never come back. Many female penguins give up their babies finally in order to find food by themselves, because they haven’t eaten anything for more than six months. In conclusion, penguins are amazing creatures. People need to do something to protect penguins and other animals.(words:228)

Response:
According to this video, I have to say that human activity actually is the reason leading animals into dangerous situation. First, deforestation in every country is for human’s need. Forest is an important ecosystem for animals and plants. Many kinds of animals depend on forests because of the interdependence between animals and plants. With the population explored, we easily occupied the land which is animals’ home, but it is difficult for animals to find a new place to live. In addition, human’s waste is another problem. Like oil dumping shown on the video, it affects penguins, fishes, dolphins, whales, sharks, etc. The ocean is polluted, and large amount of ocean species died. It affects human beings as well, because fishes we eat contain poison. Finally, in some countries, it is encouraged to kill animals. For example, in Canada, millions of seals are killed every year for the beautiful fur, because it is high profits in cloth industry. There is a small town in Japan, where local people catch dolphins and sell them to museums, and use the rest of them as food.  To conclude, animals have the equal right as human to live on this planet. They need our protection.

  1. I totally agree with Julie. Humans’ activities have changed too many things, and that has required every creature to make great sacrifices. Reckless destruction of nature by human beings has brought ecological catastrophe, and I believe that we humans as well as other organisms are also suffering from the disaster. In fact, our planet itself is groaning in pain. Moreover, penguins’ crisis is not just their own problems any more. The melting of the ice in Antarctica which is a main habitat of penguins and climate change are caused by global warming, and they bring very serious problems. These have put penguins in danger, so have humans causing sea levels to rise and the unpredictability of the weather . Why don’t people recognize that we are not the only living thing on earth? Why don’t people realize the fact that we should not junk up earth any longer? Maybe people will say that we already know about it, but I feel that we don’t know to be sure about it. Therefore, I think it is the most urgent task that we sincerely realize the facts that our selfishness is destroying not only our planet but also ourselves.

  2. I liked your choose Julie! I saw the penguins just at zoo, but all the time I considered them very sensible and friendly. Couple days ago I red to my son a little story about animals and I found more information about penguins and after that we watch together at “Happy feet “ , a nice animated movie about penguins. Maybe this is a good way to learn more about animals. And if somebody loves something try to protect it. It true, sometimes any love is not powerful than money, and the money will be all the time the principal reason for people to not care about animals. We talk about penguins, but what about chickens?! Everyday we eat meat but this animals, even they are domestic or not, suffered just because this is the wish of some people. In this movie I found about a good reaction of Argentinean Government. They moved some containers with oil because the penguins were affected. It was a good example and maybe other governments will fellow this example. And maybe all of us will be more careful with our “friends” (Words: 188)

  4. Yeah....Penguins are fascinating creatures. They are professional divers in animals' world. Especially, I kinda like the walking styles of penguins.Impressively, according to some scientists, those clumsy walking styles of penguins have their own meanings. Penguins walk like that because it those walking styles consume far less energy than normal; thus, penguins can travel for long distances. It's absolutely hard for other species to live under one roof with our humankind. We are not really kind roommates. Many species are dead due tom our activities. However, we should take more awareness of how we affect other species. Not only about penguin but other species. There are many species out there dying because of the polluted environment which is caused by humans.Humans and other animals are neighbors in this planet;therefore, we need to be nice to our neighbors and do not throw our garbages to other species's houses.

  5. I totally agree with Julie idea too. Humans’ activities are changing everything and instead of saving animal they are killing them. This video is very good to learn about the animals and there is lot of movie and cartoons about this situation. The example that I can give and remember is a “happy feet”. We can learn from all this movies and protect the animals. People have to stop thinking about them self all the time and care a little bit for the animal and try to make an environment that they can enjoy and have fun like humans. ( word 100)
