Summary:
Michael Pawlyn, who is an architect, has inspired from nature. In Michael’s lecture, he thinks that we can create things in our life by learning the ways of natural category products do. Moreover, he describes three challenges we need to bring into architectural environment with detailed examples in the planet. The first challenge is radical increases in recourse efficiency. The Eden Project is a typical superstructure from the inspiration of biology, and it switched the nature to its own function. The second challenge is the idea of linear to closed loop. In ecosystem, waste from one organism is the nutrient for another. In cities, we can use waste to create more values. For example, a restaurant De Kas in Amsterdam uses food waste to heat the building; processes waste water into fresh water using its water treatment system; and utilizes coffee waste for mushroom growth. Finally, the third challenge is to use solar economy as much as we can. In nature, some beetles adapt to the desert because they have bumps beneath shells can save water to make them cooler. In architectural project, the ideal technology is to concentrate on solar power to create electricity. We receive 10,000 times as much solar energy every year as we use in fossil forms which are limited resources on this planet, and are going to be exhausted sooner or later. To conclude, Michael positively believes that studying the nature from how it solves problems will give us substantial solutions and innovations.(words:248)

Response:
I think it’s quite an interesting lecture for me to learn a person’s inspiration from nature. Firstly, I like architecture very much. Looking at the famous buildings all over the world, such as, Sydney Opera House in Australia, Empire State Building in United States, The Cathedral of Cologne in Germany, these are so impressive and gorgeous. Secondly, I have to say that this architect’s idea is incredible. This is not the first time that I’ve heard the thought of structure from nature. Normally, some architects design the buildings from physics, fewer smart designers have other inspiration especially like nature environment, and Michael Pawlyn, however, proved his thoughts into society. I am really impressed by The Eden Project and the restaurant De Kas. The last reason I prefer this lecture is that I’d like to get desire from this wonderful world to create values into my life. Life is about experiencing, just as this architect’s positive way of thinking, we can create the exciting things we have ever seen. What an amazing lecture! What a brilliant architect! (words:177 )
